Creating Your DIY Home Decor Project List

What is it that we love about those spontaneous DIY home décor projects? What makes them so damn satisfying?

Sometimes we just seem to get that inspiration right out of the blue and we feel compelled to act on it before we lose the moment. This is what I heard from many DIYers.

Planning Your DIY Home Decor Projects

And then this is followed by a planning stage where you are trying to mesh that idea in your head into something that is real and convert it into something nice in your home. You will hear many people say that this is the most enjoyable part of the process. The reason given is usually that they never know what to expect from that realistic conversion from what they are seeing in their mind’s eye.

What I recommend to those people that have these kinds of experiences a lot and you enjoy taking action on inspirations like this, then why not begin collecting your great ideas?

Organizing Your Home Projects

Create a place for yourself in your home where you can create and generate these nice DIY home décor ideas. If you see a picture in one of your favorite magazines, then clip it and store it somewhere for later. When you see it again in a few months, you may be able to take action on it. This is how creativity works, you have to keep cultivating it over and over like a garden, until it begins bearing some really nice veggies and fruits for you.

I always recommend setting up a folder on your computer’s hard drive. The reason is that most of us are using the internet for our inspiration source these days. A folder is where you download images that you find inspiring. Secondly, I recommend you set up a spreadsheet to jot down your ideas and sort them accordingly.

Listed are some DIY home décor project lists that can help you get started:

Why We Love DIY Projects

What is it about DIY projects that all of us love? It doesn’t matter if it is something that’s as easy and simple as putting together an IKEA cabinet or bookshelf, or just creating a crazy something using your own hands and ideas, it always gives us a very satisfying sense of accomplishment. As stated in the famous publication, Psychology Today, it can also increase the value of the object’s worth, but it is the self-satisfaction of accomplishing these DIY projects is the main thing that matters in the end. It is when you build these things yourself is what really makes them more valuable to you.

DIY Projects Create the IKEA Effect

The very act of building things, using your own blood and sweat to create and have a physical item or result, really gives it the magic and automatically having that added value that goes above and beyond the inherent quality it provides. This is what researchers refer to as the “IKEA effect.”

For example, there was one particular study where participants who were asked to build an easy and simple IKEA storage box by themselves were very willing to actually pay a lot more money for that box than groups of participants who were looking at storage boxes that were already built. Participants in yet another study that had constructed their very own origami cranes and frogs valued them approximately five times more than other groups of participants did. This added value was not only about the added effort, but it was also about the completion of those projects, whereas those built-then-disassembled projects that incomplete got no such benefit in the view of the study participants.

Handmade Magic

People also highly value things that are handmade, and as it turns out, they will value them even more when they have already attempted to build something that was similar. So, could we actually see a downside to these projects? The answer is yes, but this occurs if you attempt to sell your own custom creations.

So the cold hard fact is that the awesome custom bookshelf you built does not appeal to others near as much as it does to you. Some people have big problems accepting this. But they will have to accept it if they try to sell their creations to others. It is always best to wait until others start asking you to build things for them. If this happens, then others are also seeing the value in your creations.
