Why We Love DIY Projects

What is it about DIY projects that all of us love? It doesn’t matter if it is something that’s as easy and simple as putting together an IKEA cabinet or bookshelf, or just creating a crazy something using your own hands and ideas, it always gives us a very satisfying sense of accomplishment. As stated in the famous publication, Psychology Today, it can also increase the value of the object’s worth, but it is the self-satisfaction of accomplishing these DIY projects is the main thing that matters in the end. It is when you build these things yourself is what really makes them more valuable to you.

DIY Projects Create the IKEA Effect

The very act of building things, using your own blood and sweat to create and have a physical item or result, really gives it the magic and automatically having that added value that goes above and beyond the inherent quality it provides. This is what researchers refer to as the “IKEA effect.”

For example, there was one particular study where participants who were asked to build an easy and simple IKEA storage box by themselves were very willing to actually pay a lot more money for that box than groups of participants who were looking at storage boxes that were already built. Participants in yet another study that had constructed their very own origami cranes and frogs valued them approximately five times more than other groups of participants did. This added value was not only about the added effort, but it was also about the completion of those projects, whereas those built-then-disassembled projects that incomplete got no such benefit in the view of the study participants.

Handmade Magic

People also highly value things that are handmade, and as it turns out, they will value them even more when they have already attempted to build something that was similar. So, could we actually see a downside to these projects? The answer is yes, but this occurs if you attempt to sell your own custom creations.

So the cold hard fact is that the awesome custom bookshelf you built does not appeal to others near as much as it does to you. Some people have big problems accepting this. But they will have to accept it if they try to sell their creations to others. It is always best to wait until others start asking you to build things for them. If this happens, then others are also seeing the value in your creations.
